What I Focus On
HPSA Designation Research
Health Professional Shortage Area designations are the gateway to federal healthcare funding. I research HPSA data, track designation changes, and help communities understand their shortage status and what it means for access to care.
Understanding Designation Benefits
After designation, facilities can access Medicare bonuses, NHSC site approval, provider recruitment tools, J-1 visa waivers, and federal grant eligibility. I write about how these programs work and what communities should know.
Designation Monitoring & Renewal
Designations expire every three years. I track score changes, withdrawal proposals, and renewal timelines so communities can stay informed about their designation status.
Data Journalism & Policy Analysis
I write about healthcare access gaps using federal data — HRSA designation records, Census demographics, and provider databases. My articles inform policymakers, administrators, and communities about what's at stake.
What HPSA Designation Unlocks
Medicare & Medicaid bonus payments for providers
National Health Service Corps loan repayment eligibility
Visa waivers for international medical graduates
Priority consideration for federal grant funding
Why HPSA Designations Matter
Health Professional Shortage Area designations are federal classifications that identify communities lacking adequate healthcare providers. For designated communities, the stakes are enormous: 10% Medicare and Medicaid bonus payments for providers, National Health Service Corps loan repayment eligibility, J-1 visa waivers for international medical graduates, and priority consideration for FQHC funding.
Yet many qualifying communities never obtain designation — or lose it without understanding the implications. The data analysis required, the federal bureaucracy involved, and the three-year renewal cycle create significant barriers for under-resourced health departments and facilities.
My work sits at the intersection of data analysis, policy navigation, and community advocacy — helping facilities understand where they stand, what they’re eligible for, and how to position themselves for maximum benefit.
